embroidery on photograph

about the project

This project was made for the class Photography (Departamento de Design - Universidade de Brasília), conduced by professor André Maya. We had to turn in a series of photographs and explain our decisions based on what we learned that semester.
process

At the time this was made I was spending all my days in the university campus, and I was loving the classes, the meetings, the research and all the fun the students had, in so many different ways. So for my project theme, I chose the university and the students, and more specifically the relationship between both.

I spent a couple of days wondering with the camera my professor had lent me, and I took pictures of students in their natural habitat. I was so inspired by the idea that not all that happens in a university happens inside a classroom. After many photographs had been taken, I analyzed them and noticed how the students were relaxing in places that weren't really made for this activity, like stairs, grass and even the main building's roof. The modernist concrete aesthetic of the university campus contrasted with the people in them, and I thought I could accentuate their relationship by embroidering colored yarn between them.

The University of Brasília was built to be a space of knowledge, culture and sociability, and after so many decades of financial and ideological attacks, it was beautiful to witness the way this community still lives.
